Session 5 Creating a Buddy Bench – World of Girls – Girl Scout Journey

by Kristi on February 27, 2014

And… back to the Journey!

I feel like we do this ever year. We get started on the Journey and we promptly get distracted and wander down another path. Now it’s February! We’ve had a lot of fun with some field trips and things which I shall have to post about later but today we got on the path of finishing our journey!

We Heard a Story, Told a Story, and Changed a Story so now we are working on the ‘Change our World’ part. We actually ran across the greatest article a few months ago that I printed out and read to the girls. We try to talk about bullying every other month and this article was about a “Buddy Bench” (article link). The girls loved it and one of them said ‘WE should do that HERE!’ and we latched onto that.

So today we talked about how we should implement it at our school. The girls decided they wanted to a meeting (rather than a letter), they all wanted the chance to speak, and they brainstormed things to talk about. Once we had 4 ideas, we broke up into groups to think of sentences to say during the meeting so every girl could talk. They had great ideas.

After the meeting we had a parent tell us that the principle was talking about Buddy Benches already! So we emailed him quickly to set up a meeting so the girls can present their ideas to him ASAP.

Our co-leader also brought in Filipino food, we talked about the Philippines, and then she showed the girls a traditional dance. While we had the map up we read the last few postcards we had received for World Thinking Day, all the way from Canada and Abu Dhabi.

We ended the meeting with a fun ‘getting to know you’ game, sort of like bingo, that was in the Journey book.
