Happy 5th Birthday, Sammie!

Happy Birthday to my beautiful 5 year old! Just a note that I am totally writing this on JANUARY 9th but I am back-dating it to December so I can find it later! Isn’t she gorgeous? Beautiful dress that she received from Grandma JJ the night before and she let me braid her hair.  We surprised her with balloons and the new Tinkerbell DVD which she had been wanting. She was SO excited to get it.

Sam's 5th Birthday

Here we are at music class. These two continue to be the best of friends and simply play all day. It’s rare to hear them argue and fight and they are always hanging out together. I hope it continues. It’s so sweet to see.

Annnnnddddd tada! My beautiful (*ahem*) rainbow cupcakes, recipe courtesy of Angry Julie Monday! Go look at her picture and come back. K? Her colors were a lot more vibrant so I liked them better. I think if I left out the yellow in the ones below, they would have been better. It was still really fun to make and they were delicious so it was a great experiment.

Rainbow Cupcake Batter

I simply used a spoon to put in small amounts of batter into the cups. I was not very scientific about it but it worked out.

The yellow is just not attractive!

Taking a quick break to open presents with Grandma JJ. New dresses, shoes, accessories, and this beautiful brown fur jacket. It’s the softest thing you have ever felt!

Okay, back to the cupcakes! Sam and GG joined me at this point and we made the frosting by hand. YUM, the frosting was the best! I pretty much used every single item that Angry Julie recommended, including the Wilton 12-Piece Cupcake Decorating Set to pipe on the icing. Yep, it is definitely for lame people who have no artistic bent to them because look at these beautiful cupcakes! Yes, we did that.  Don’t they look beautifully piped on? Of course the whole ‘rainbow cupcake’ theory was pretty much wasted on these preschoolers because all you can see is the pink icing.

They were great though and everyone liked them.

Back to the morning of her birthday, we went to school for music time and she got her birthday hat and was sung to by all the classes.  She also got to choose her favorite song and I think she choose the Itsy Bitsy Spider, although I’m not certain if I remembered that right!

Happy Birthday Hat

After school she came home to play a bit and also to Griffin throwing up a few times and sending her into tears.  He threw up (on the tile, thank god, and also thank god for my husband who cleans up puke) and she burst into tears and threw herself on the floor. She was SO upset he was throwing up. We had just put her presents on the floor and I wasn’t sure why she was crying? She was just so upset and scared for him that she freaked out.

I thought that was really sweet. She obviously has a much more empathetic personality than I do because while I felt bad for Griffin (and was also wondering sick? flu? ate something bad? OH NOES!) I was really wondering why the heck she was crying and could she please pipe down because we had to clean all of this up!

Anyway. After a soothing bath for Griffin, we opened up some presents.

Opening Presents

She got another dress, some more jewelry, and these fairy dolls.  She is fairly hard to judge on gifts because she tends to open things up with a very serious face and takes a few minutes to figure out what it is, does she like it, etc. I did manage to get this photo of her smiling at the gift once she got to look them all over.

I must say though, since I’m technically writing this a month later, Griffin is the one who takes these dolls around like his best friends. He pretty much sleeps with them.

Birthday Fairies

I think half the time these gifts (and parties!) are for me and what I want them to have and I really need to consider they are usually happier with the box than the present. But still. It was a nice birthday. 🙂

Kids in a Box

That afternoon was Sam’s last soccer game and pizza party. We went to the party and Griffin proceeded to lay his head down on my lap the whole time and was obviously sick. SO sad. So Sam went off with her BFF, Kaylee over to Chuck E Cheese and proceeded to play like crazy.  SO a great time was had by all.

Until Sam got violently sick early Sunday morning and we had to cancel her party with her school friends so that was slightly sad. She was so sick that she almost didn’t care! Almost. We were able to reschedule it during the Christmas break and most everyone was able to come so that was a great thing.

Happy Birthday to my five year old! Oh, how the time flies.
