2 Year Appt

Let’s recap:

Birth: 7.1 lbs, 20 in
2 Month: 10.6, 22 1/4 in
4 Month: 13.6, 24 in
6 Month: 15.9, 25 1/2 in
9 Month: 18.4, 27 1/2 in
1 Year: 19.14 lbs , 29 3/4in
18 Months: 24 lbs, 12 oz, 32 ½ in
2 Years: 27 lbs, 12 oz, 34 1/2 in

At her one year appointment she was 25% for weight and 60% for height. Before that she bounced around 50% for both. At 18 months she skipped back to 55% for weight and 75% for height. Today she has averaged out at 60% for height and weight. Woohoo!

The Dr wasn’t concerned about her speech which I was grateful for. She is learning new words every week or so, rather she is learning new sounds for words… they aren’t ACTUAL words but we know what they are! haha! Justin apparently taught her ‘Hi’ the other day cause this morning he said ‘Hi Sam!’ and she waved back (what she normally does) and say ‘Hiiiiiiii’. OMG, I nearly fell over in shock! haha

But the Dr was nice and I didn’t get into any arguments with him (always a good thing) and Sam was able to do all the things he asked about with the exception of one or two. She can stack over 6 blocks, she can point out things like her feet and eyes, she listens to what I say and understands it, she can (try to) put on her shoes. She can’t say two words together to make a sentance though and I think there was one other one that I forgot. Oh, she doesn’t eat veggies. 🙂 So I made her eat a piece of carrot after her appointment. LOL – She actually ate it, I was shocked. Apparently I need to offer those more.

The best thing EVER was the after Dr visit… Yes, the shots. Papa was here for the appointment (as he always is, what a nice Papa!) and insisted on holding her for her shots. As Papa has a huge needle phobia this was kind of entertaining. In, you know, a nice way. For me, I guess. LOL – She had to do the TB test and she was watching her put the needle in her arm and Justin was saying, Don’t look! Don’t look! Look at Mama! – and made her turn her head. She didn’t even cry!! Of course for the three shots in the legs she BAWLED although I’m kind of tempted to say she may have been crying at how HARD the nurse was pressing down on her legs. Jeez, they were red after she removed her hands.

Anyway, for all of you who have children, is that not the worse sound to hear? The scream of pain while you just sit and watch the realization in your childs eyes that HOLY CRAP that HURTS and why the hell are you holding down my arms? Anyway, I couldn’t see her since Justin was holding her down but the screams of pain where icky. Obviously, worse for her. But anyway.

So what was the first thing out of Papa’s mouth when we picked her up?

“Mama’s gonna get you some ice cream, sweetie!”

Yes, yes he did! LOL – What a pushover!! At 9:30 in the morning! Offering ice cream!! And wasn’t I just talking about the fact that she understands everything we say now? Oh yes, she knows what ice cream is and she was PERFECTLY happy with that! And wanted her ice cream! Of course Papa left to rush back to work and what was Mama stuck with? Yes, a little baby doll wanting her ice cream. hahaha

No, she didn’t want to go see Gymbo which was what we were GOING to do so we could kill an hour in the morning. Actually we always see Gymbo on Tuesdays but anyway. She wanted ice cream. (I can’t mimic the sound she makes for ice cream but I know what it is and she was asking for it!) Of course, yes I’m going to make this all about meeeeeee, I can’t have ice cream. And yet I was forced home (Sam goes a little stircrazy at home so we usually get out every day) to get my sweet little baby ice cream! So, of course, I had to make a stop for BROWNIE MIX. Yum.

I gave her a scoop of ice cream and I had some sprinkles in the cupboard which I mixed in and she happily dug in with her spoon. As soon as she started, I could see the ending in this scenario… We have never had ice cream at home (with exception to her cake, or something like that) but right on the table in a little bowl with a spoon? Oh yes, she wanted MORE. MORE ice cream, Mama, MORE! Ahh, wasn’t that fun. 🙂 Luckily I had the brownie mix to distract her and she licked the spoon. HEE!

What a day!

wow, its amazing how quickly they grow! sounds like she is doing great! and yes, the absolute WORST is the shots. there they sit, so innocent and trusting, and then WHAM! i get choked up every time, even still! poor babies. great story about the ice cream, though, haha. oh and i don’t know if you remember but haylee wasn’t putting two words together at age two either, so i called in a speech therapist to evaluate her. they came to our house and no sooner did i do this than she started talking! they thought i was crazy i think! and look, now she is in the gifted and talented program at school! they all do things at their own pace, you know? before you know it she will be talking back! hahaha

Nolan did not reallt talk either until about 3 months after he turned two. Then all of a sudden out of nowhere he was saying complete sentences. I remember being really worried and freaked out because Avalon could talk very well by the time she was two.

The worst experiance I had was with Avalon for her two year check up. At the time we were with Kaiser and they wanted to take a blood test. So I thought, ok she is two years old. They will take it out of her foot or leg or something like they usually do. Oh no! The lady put that band around her arm and poked her in teh arm with a needle just like an adult. And she started moving the needle all around saying she could’nt find her vein. They made me hold Avalon down so she would’nt move. Avalon was screaming and crying and looking at me like “why are you doing this to me?” Nolan was just a few months old and in his stroller screaming his head off probably wondering what I was doing to his sister. After about 20 seconds I told the nurse to stop adn forget it. I don’t care if she needs a blood test. They finally sent out another nurse who just pricked her finger and then pushed the blood out. It was the worst experiance and has since tramatized me. I make Dan go when the kids get any blood work done now.

poor sam 🙁 shots are never fun

when i was teaching preschool, i worked with 3 year olds, but sometimes on my break i would stop in the 2 year olds classroom to visit with the kids and teachers. a lot of the kids in there never talked right away or put two words together. but most all of them did it suddenly – like, out of the blue.

i learned, through my schooling and everything, that there are lots of parents who still “baby talk” to their children, even at age 3 and 4. it is cute and of course you want to do it, but at this age, when they are developing speaking skills, it’s important to talk to them using real words because it reinforces them to try to use the correct words too 🙂

just watch, sam is gonna be blabbering about anything and everything before you know it, and then you’ll wonder what happened to those days when she didn’t say much 🙂
