2023 Theater Banquet

by Kristi on June 17, 2023

This year was special as both kids were in musical theater together. Slightly bittersweet as this will be the ONLY year they will be at school together as G is transferring to a different high school.

Beyond the benefits of Sam being the official chauffeur, they were in zero period Intermediate Theater and the last period of Musical Theater so essentially spent a good part of the day together.

I’ve spent some time this last week browsing through the archives of this blog and the sweet mentions of what a good relationship these two have had over the years made me smile. It started early and never stopped. I think part of it is that both of them are so easy going with life in general.

But… it was awesome to see the kids in theater this year.

  • Both kids performed in Carrie
  • Two Cabaret performances
  • Sam was Mrs White in Clue
  • Both kids performed in Urinetown (such a weird name!)
  • Sam was Comedy Sportz Co-Manager and on the Theater Board
  • Both had amazing performances in Comedy Sportz through the year

The banquet celebrates their accomplishments and it was so special to hear both kids receiving awards. I had to highlight two of them as they were both singled out by Rod, their Comedy Sportz teacher.

Most Supportive Player – Sam

I shared the video below but the award was given to Sam because she is someone who is always there for others. In her position as co-manager of the Club (which had 40+ people this year!?) she had the pleasure of running all the meetings and guiding the kids for what they would do every Friday afternoon for two hours a week.

Rod highlighted that everybody feels comfortable with Sam onstage and off. It’s such a critical factor because improv is so collaborative. Sam makes sure that everybody else looks as good as possible while keeping the scene running. I have a ton of videos from the last two years but I’ll just link to a random one where it shows off Sam’s awesomeness. (There is one epic screaming fit with the piano playing in the background doing some dramatic rendition that I must find… So good!)

It was awesome to see her kindness and supportiveness highlighted in this award. She is so empathetic, funny, and talented. I’m so lucky to be able to see her develop in her acting career and just have fun during her high school years.

Most Improved Player – G

Is most improved an insult? Rod says absolutely not. Wherever they started from, they did something that showed a growth mindset. You are not in class to be good, you are in class to be better.

Again, slightly bittersweet that G will not be continuing at this high school and in this club. He would have received two additional awards had he continued which was acknowledged. One was the Rising Star and the other was a pass-down award from a Sophomore. What can you do? He’s happy he’s moving on but sad to leave such a great place.

But most improved… Rod commented that G has been in on the joke from beginning, thrives on attention, and now walks confidently on stage to perform any chance he gets. This is totally true. G was born a performer (again, look back at my archives!) and he had such a great relationship with Rod. Watching G on stage during his first two comedy sportz routines was pure gold.

Shown in the video but I had to mention it, apparently G’s nickname all year has been Baby Sam. 🙂

GO BABY SAM!

Anyway… what a pleasure to see both of these kids grow up. It’s really the best job.
