My Favorite Books of 2020

by Kristi on December 29, 2020

Here is a list of my top books of 2020. I’m closing out the last week with 188 books read and over 20 top five recommendations. Obviously, I continue to be heavily in the romance, paranormal, urban fantasy genres but I continued to work on my non-fiction, self-help, and memoir categories!

I can’t say enough about Sarah Lyons Fleming’ apocalyptic world. World Departed is set in the same world as her previous books but located in Oregon with a new cast. Eagerly awaiting her next!

Same goes for R.S. Grey, who published three books this year that I laughed out loud and enjoyed. Contemporary romance, funny, and enjoyable I put Love the One You Hate as the stand-out for 2020. Moving over to… space opera? Jessie Mihalik had an amazing end to her Polaris series (Chaos Rising), which incidentally I had Sam read and she’s been in a book hangover ever since. I added a 2nd book of hers to the list, The Queen’s Gambit because it’s a different series and was actually published in 2017. She finished off that series in 2020 though and while the last one didn’t make my 5 star list, the entire series was great.

I have to say a few worlds about the Guild Codex by Annette Marie. The series is on Kindle Unlimited (which is always good for my wallet!) and was incredibly engaging. You have Tori, the human, somehow stumbling into a world where her new three boy BFF’s are mage’s and fight the bad guys. She goes through several big life experiences, and the entire series is about 8 books but then spins off into different series that go over demons, witches, and others. It kept me on the edge of my seat. Great series to jump into!

A quick mention of Well Met, the contemporary romance set at a summer Renaissance Faire. Had to read that because of Roy and I enjoyed it. The next few authors really don’t need any explaining. You know anything they write will keep you entertained! Highly highly recommend them.

Temptress and Hench are two extremely different superhero books that I enjoyed for different reasons. I laughed the whole way through Temptress but Hench took a spin that was very unique. Supervillians need help getting their job done, how does it look from that end? A review of this book called it “decadently delicious villainous competence porn” and I fully agree.

Ending my list is Blitzscaling which was a really entertaining read by the cofounder of LinkedIn. Along with Michael Iger’s life lessons from Disney, and an excellent parenting book by one of my favorite blogger/podcaster/snarky mom, Kristen Howerton.

What was your favorite book of 2020? Anything I should add to my list for 2021? I have Blue Ocean Strategy, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, and Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey up on deck from Christmas…
