Effect of the CPSIA

I keep reading more and more about the new CPSIA (Consumer Products Safety Improvement Act) Law going into effect on February 10, 2009 and I feel so bad for all the people who currently make a living off of making or selling children’s clothes and toys. I was reading about it on BabyCheapskate this morning.

So, you can’t sell your used baby clothes on eBay or Craigslist (anywhere! Yard sales, etc!!) or BUY them from people unless you can prove they have been tested for lead or pthalates. Testing can be extremely expensive.

I know so many people who make a little money, or in some cases a LOT of money, selling used items from their children.  Where are all these old clothes and toys going to go? That is an awful lot of garbage.  I am constantly putting things in bags and either giving them away to friends or Goodwill and it looks like I won’t be able to give them to Goodwill now? I’m hoping that is wrong. I’m sure I can give away to other places who won’t resell my items.

And Etsy! I love browsing through Etsy, although I haven’t bought anything from them as yet. It looks like a lot of people will be going out of business in the children section since they won’t be able to afford testing.

On one hand, I know there have to be rules against all these handmade toys that are not built for safety but on the other hand, I think they took it way to far.

Here is the official petition that was sent to the Secretary of US Consumer Product Safety. I didn’t read the whole thing.

Here is a Facebook group on what you can do… What can you do? Sign this petition. I think it may be old but every thought helps.

It looks like there is a little hope for some people according to this Fox News report. The commission has until Monday (tomorrow) to decide if anything else should be exempt from this law.  It doesn’t look like clothing will be.

This law won’t really affect me but it will affect many of my friends.  I don’t know all the details about it, if you do, feel free to post!  Or just learn more about this law in case you may be affected.

This new law is going to cause a lot of heartache to a lot of people. I know a few people that may be affected by this. No more selling crafts at craft fairs because the item could potentially be touched by children.
