The Great Holiday Movie Binge: Part 1

The Good, The Bad, and The Cringey…

Alright, tis the season to completely abandon all regular television programming (not that I was watching much) and dive headfirst into the glittery, predictable, sometimes awful world of holiday movies. I’ve started obsessively watching them and am here to report back my findings so you don’t waste your time on the truly terrible ones. Or maybe you want to watch the terrible ones? No judgment here.

Or just have a list for next year on the ones to rewatch…

Last Christmas (Netflix) – This came out a few years ago but had Emilia Clark who I loved in Me Before You, and Game of Thrones before that. Oh, and Henry Golding who was amazing in Crazy Rich Asians. It had the absolute perfection of a soundtrack of like… a million WHAM songs, which made me go adjust my Spotify playlist and send random songs to my son. A little slow, I watched it over three days, but totally satisfying. Loved the service aspect and redemption story! Emilia always stars in the tear-jerkers.

“Take care of my heart. It was always going to be yours one way or another.”

Rewatch Factor: Yes!

Christmas Contract (Netflix) – I thought this was new this year but it was NOT. Yikes. 2018. So terrible. Horrible acting. Sweet though!

Rewatch Factor: Do not want to watch again!

No Sleep Til Christmas (Netflix) – 2018 – AHHH the soundtrack. The idea of no sleep. The safety of finding your person who you just want to sleep next to. Even if you are getting married to someone else in two weeks. Whoops. It was super silly and sad, and totally brought… like a single tear… to my eye. The soundtrack though!!! A few GREAT ones. Sleepwalking by Plumb… I definitely am adding this beautiful song to my play list. The violin behind it, c’est manifique!

‘Cause you
Woke up my heart
You woke up my heart

Sleepwalking, sleepwalking
You were there
– Sleepwalking, Plumb

Rewatch Factor: I mean… No. I don’t think I can. The Mother was terrible. I will keep it in my memory!

Princess Switch, #3!! (Netflix) Romancing the Star! 2021 – Whoops, how did I NOT WATCH THIS in the last few years? Maggie Moo!!! Ridiculous, silly, but I always enjoy allll the Vanessa Hudgens variations! I have probably watched the first one… (2018, okay so maybe…) 4 or 5 times? I love twin switches! Very entertaining.

Rewatch Factor: No to the rewatch, stick with the 1st one!

A Merry Little Ex-Mas (Netflix) – 2025! The first new movie to hit AND it had Alicia Silverstone. PLUS Oliver Hudson. I don’t think I’ve watch really anything he’s in but I adore his sister Kate. Totally sold. Divorced but came back together? Sweet and funny, very true to Silverstone’s true character (vegan, saving the world, etc) but I enjoyed it because I follow her on IG and generally like her.

Rewatch Factor: I would probably hit replay if it showed up on my feed next year!

Champagne Problems (Netflix) – Ooh la la! Paris? France? A chateau? Champagne? SOLD! Very sweet and entertaining. I’m not a huge Minka Kelly fan – I need to go back and watch Friday Night Lights – but I enjoyed her. I enjoyed the French and the storyline. And the bookstore. And the Eiffel Tower. I told Sam to watch it.

Rewatch Factor: Yes, just to see Paris in December

A Very Jonas Christmas Movie (Disney+) – 2025 – Yes I DID turn this on. I’m almost embarrassed to say. I don’t really know the brothers, not really a huge fan of their music, but i adore Priyanka – I think she is married to… Okay, I did just look it up – Nick! She’s married to Nick. Anyway. Slightly funny. Songs… I can’t remember anything about them, I was multi-tasking with work.

Rewatch Factor: That would be a no.

Mistletoe Mixup (Netflix) – I’m not a Lawrence brother fan. I never watched Blossom, or Boy Meets World, so the fact that the brothers were all actual brothers just sailed over my head. I had to figure it out when I saw the cast list and wondered… why do they all have the same last name? The meet-cute of both of them was hilarious and then very cringy. And terrible. But somehow enjoyable. The Grandma was caricature hilarious. And she got her happy ending. OMG, this was 2021 and I just realized it. There are like SEQUELS. Should I watch them? No. No, I will not.

Rewatch Factor: Nope.

I’m entertaining myself and double posting this on Substack as I want to test some of their features.
